Obama believes that defining yourself as multiracial is trying steer away from being “black” and instead gravitating towards the comfortable spectrum that puts you in a safe arena to be “an individual” and to become separate from the culture that’s been put in shackles, squeezed to the back of the bus and told they couldn’t eat at that restaurant. Obama couldn’t be more incorrect. I’ve taken the ERBs, ISEE’s, SAT’s and pretty much every other fill in the bubble test there is out there and while every other kid put down their pencil, I was still stuck on the Race box. According to all the acronym assessment packets, I couldn’t be black and white. That was impossible. Nor did you have the option to be Asian and African; or Asian, White, Black, Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino and other all at the same time. While every other kid sat there waiting, I wondered who sat down to make this box and decided that black’s and white’s don’t have kids and you could only possibly be one bubble. Since then, I have decided to give up on the bubble system, and I am promoting a brand new box system. This one allows you to select multiple boxes, and it certainly doesn’t include that dreaded “other” option. If you don’t want to fill in a box, there’s a nice area to write in whatever you want; whether it be Hispafrican, Pacific Caucasian, or I’m still navigating these seas.
I am a firm believer that in anyone’s attempts to be non-racist, non-sexist or non-homophobic, they tend to be perceived as the most racist, sexist, homophobic people in the room. To point out that there aren’t enough girls in one group in a class and to therefore move people around to make it fair, only stresses that deep down, your afraid you really are sexist. Therefore, by extension, to attempt to sit down and decide which race you really want to define yourself by only verifies that you are under the impression that one is significantly better to represent yourself as. I’m not going to pretend like I haven’t fallen into this trap, I’ve filled out the “African American” bubble when it suited me best, and turned around the next day and filled out “Caucasian” when it benefited me more. I’ve been to Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and I’ve got family in Texas, Oregon, South Dakota, Sweden, Egypt, France, Denmark, Ghana and more. If you believe that I haven’t seen many perspectives of race, you are sadly misguided. I’ve spent my life under a roof of a white father and crazy black mother, and if there is one thing I have learned it is that race doesn’t matter. In a way at least, you see, race to me is just tool now. Most kids that I know get one or two similar ones, like “I’m Russian and Ukrainian” or “British and French”, but I am blessed to have “Danish, French, Egyptian and Ghanaian” and you can bet that I analyze every reaction that I get, because those are some of the funniest moments of my life. Maybe I don’t care about race because it doesn’t affect me, or because it doesn’t look I would care - I mean look at my skin, eyes and hair, but see there is my point. Race doesn’t matter anymore, because I am black. What is the point of defining people as black if blacks aren’t black anymore?
I’m here to let you know about a great new feature in all cars: blinkers. You can use these nifty little lights to indicate that your thinking about the possiblility of turning in the near future. For the few of you who have found this out, you can also turn them off AFTER you have used them! That’s right, you don’t have to leave them on for your entire car ride.
:O I have always done this, and just realized that I have seen the page fold but never clicked it…god I hate myself right now.I’m reminded of the numerous times I have clicked the tumblr’s name, then searched through pages before getting to the post I wanted, so that I could forward the permalink to someone.
*facepalm*
There are thousands of blogs about minimalism, that is a fact. There are also hundreds of design, fashion, humor, etc and you don’t see anyone shutting their blog down because of that. Each represents a different taste or style even when they post about the same genre. I have gone through many blogs and tumbr’s in the past few years, and I currently follow/subscribe to one…minma. Minma has served as a huge inspiration and source of good design since I found it, and to see it go would be a very depressing event for me. I urge you to continue, I am not entirely certain why it is going, but I get the feeling that it isn’t truly because “there are many aggregators out there”, because even if there are, none are as brilliant as minma.
Doing a little update to the theme, expect to see little “t“‘s all over the page for about half the day ;)
Update: Pssht. That was easy. Now I just have to get rid of the underline on the permalink, and make it more noticeable.
Update: Yea, haven’t even gotten to the t’s. Sorry about the super small text, and no spacing between posts….
Decided to start tagging my posts now. I went back and did the last few posts and will begin to add tags to everything…now I just have to incorporate tagging into my theme…
Finally got around to making some changes to my theme. Let me know what you think:
